The Natchez Trace stretched from Natchez Mississippi to Nashville Tennessee approximately 500 miles. It took an average of 30 days to make this trek with a horse a person could reach their destination in 20 to 25 days.
Built between 2050 and 1800 years ago.
Water tupelo and bald cypress trees can live in deep water for long periods. After taking root in summer when the swamp is nearly dry the seedlings can stay alive in water deep enough to kill other plants. As this abandoned river channel fills with silt the vegetation and other trees will gradually replace the cypress and tupelo. This change will take several hundred years.
The odorless wood of bald cypress has long been valued by its water resistance, thus is called wood eternal. Still usable prehistoric wood is found in swamps as far north as New Jersey although is more common in the southeast.
On April 27, 2011 three sections of the Parkway were heavily impacted by a series of tornados. Most of the trees were either downed or damaged. The eight mile stretch between mile post 204 and 212 experienced the most dramatic impact.
This occurred in areas where the soil was soft and the Trace became deeply eroded. In these sunken places robbers and cutthroats capitalized on this and attacked the travelers from above.
