Christmas At The Cove

by Rachel Brimble

GENRE: Contemporary Romance

  1. What or who inspired you to start writing?

I started writing at the age seven or eight after I devoured Enid Blyton’s Secret Seven series. I would write a story and tie the pages together with ribbon. I continued to write on and off for years but it wasn’t until I gave up work to have my eldest daughter that the bug really got me. By the time my youngest started school full-time in 2005, I was on a mission to be published. The Wild Rose Press published SEARCHING FOR SOPHIE in 2007.

  1. As far as your writing goes, what are your future plans?

I really hope to write bigger single title romantic suspense novels in addition to my Harlequin books. I also have three Victorian books published with eKensington/Lyrical Press (fourth book out in March) but feel ready to try a new period.

  1. If you could be one of the characters from any of your books, who would it be and why?

Ooh, that is too hard for me to answer! I love them all…even the villains. With Templeton Cove, I have created a setting and community that feels so real to me after writing five books in four years all set in the same town. The characters that reappear the most are Cat Forrester/Garrett and Marian Cohen so I must have a special soft spot for those two ladies.

  1. If you were the casting director for the film version of your novel, who would play your leading roles?

Ah, this is an easy question f as I start all my books by scouring the internet for the actor/actress who will act as a visual for my hero and heroine. For CHRISTMAS AT THE COVE, Carrie Underwood is Carrie and Joe Manganiello (True Blood) is Scott

  1. Do you belong to a critique group? If so how does this help or hinder your writing?

I have three fantastic critique partners and have worked with them for several years. They are my life line! I seriously couldn’t do my best work without them – they are honest, invaluable and always on hand to help. We exchange a chapter at a time of our current work in progress. Having three extra pairs of eyes look at your work at the first draft stage is fantastic!

  1. What is the best and worst advice you ever received? (regarding writing or publishing)

Best: Give yourself permission to write a crappy first draft – the clean up can come later.

Worst: Give up now – you’ll never be published (contest judge in 2005)

  1. Do you have an all time favorite book?

I love Gone With The Wind and it’s the only book I’ve read four times – I also love the film. My favourite author is Nora Roberts and I love so many of her books, especially the romantic suspense, I would be hard pushed to choose a favorite.

  1. Have you started your next project? If so, can you share a little bit about your book?

I have completed my first big, single title romantic suspense which I hope will be the first book in a brand new series – my agent is shopping that one out right now. In addition to this, I am writing the sixth Templeton Cove book and plotting a new historical romance. Busy, busy!

  1. What is your favorite reality show?

I’m in the UK but hopefully your visitors will know I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here! I just love it…even though I end up hiding behind a cushion when they do the eating challenges.

  1. Can you tell us a little bit about what it’s like to write a series.

I absolutely adore Templeton Cove! When I wrote the first book, Finding Justice, I hoped the acquiring editor pictured a series as I did. Thankfully, she agreed. I make sure all the books can be read stand-alone, but love revisiting my favorite English seaside town and checking in with existing characters…especially the town’s matriarch, Marian Cohen. She’s fantastic! CHRISTMAS AT THE COVE is book four in the series and book five, HER HOMETOWN REDEMPTION is also available now. I am working on book 6 as we speak…

More family for Christmas?

Scott Walker doesn’t have time for a relationship. The sexy mechanic has career ambitions, not to mention a mother and three sisters to take care of. The last thing he needs is Carrie Jameson, the beauty he never forgot, arriving in Templeton Cove over the holidays with some unexpected news.

Scott still finds Carrie irresistible, and he’s not one to shirk responsibility. Scott’s issues with his own dad make the prospect of parenthood a minefield. But if he and Carrie can overcome their fears, this Christmas could bring them the best gift of all.

She glanced around the garage. “I’m sorry to turn up unannounced like this, but I’m here and we need to talk.”

He stared at her in disbelief as questions, demands and weaknesses hurtled around inside him, battling with the intense sexual frustration storming through his body. “Just like that, you turn up and say, ‘We need to talk’?” He shook his head and turned away from her, lest he get caught in the snare of her wide, impossibly gorgeous eyes. “Go away.”

Keeping his back to her, he uncrossed his arms and planted his hands on his hips. He tipped his head back and smiled as insanity rushed his bloodstream. He wanted to grab her, shake her, kiss her and make love to her. God, he wanted to drop to his damn knees in front of her and beg her to tell him where she’d been and now she was back, was she back for good?

He closed his eyes, barely resisting the urge to cover his ears with his hands and block out her tempting voice, achingly laced with the unmistakable sound of a plea. “Whether you want to see me or not, I have to talk to you, and I won’t leave the Cove until you hear me out.”

Her heels clicked closer and his body tensed, waiting for what came next. The dangerous, musky scent of her perfume wafted under his nostrils and he inhaled. She approached the bench beside him and put down a business card. “My number’s on there. I’m staying at the Christie. Call me when you’re ready to talk. It’s important or I wouldn’t have come.”

He glanced at the card. Carrie Jameson. Producer.

She turned and walked away. He let her go, feeling like a smashed up car after a hurricane, tossed and turned through the air before being spewed crudely across the highway, left to rust and burn.

He picked up the card. His hand shook and the rare sting of tears shamed him. What the hell was he supposed to do now? Carrie was back and his libido told him only too clearly there was no way in hell he wouldn’t go to her. How was he supposed to let her go a second time when he’d lived the last three years regretting he didn’t stop her the first time?
