EXCERPT:

We had just finished up in the territory of Giza and boarded the ship when we received an urgent buzz.

“Nile, come in!”

Nile hit the button to respond to the call, “This is Nile.”

“It’s Cessar. We’ve been ambushed in Cairo, not far from Elms Forest. We barely escaped.”

“What happened?” Nile replied.

“We lost her! I’m headed to the palace now to drop off the others. Then we need to rendezvous.”

“Slow down. You’re talking too fast. Who is missing and what exactly happened?”

“We received a distress call from a malfunctioned ship. Under Princess Shiray’s orders, we took four crew members and went to assist them. Once we got there, two Polar ships attacked. We were outnumbered and then they blew up August’s ship. Shiray was behind me, but after the explosion, I couldn’t find her. I searched everywhere. We cleared the area in case more Polars came. But we have to go back to search for her again.”

“You lost Shiray!” Nile screamed.

“My deepest apologies, Prince Nile. I advised her to contact you first. But she said not to.”

“Stubborn ass,” I chastised. What a mess! I’d been giddy because Nile had agreed to let Kadeem come along with us. He hadn’t made any snide remarks toward Kadeem, either. Now my happiness was turned to terror.

“You should have reported to me, orders or not,” Nile spat. “Send over the coordinates where you were attacked. And meet us there with a full team immediately.” Nile switched Cessar offline and spun to me. “I can’t believe this!”

“We have to find her,” I insisted.

“We will,” Kadeem encouraged.

“Why did she only go with a handful of crew and not notify anyone?” Nile asked.

“I’m not sure why,” I added. “She’s been quiet and hasn’t seemed herself lately. She’s hard-headed, but knows better. I’m scared, Nile. Hurry.”

Nile accelerated the ship. We arrived near Elms Forest in record time. There were no signs of Polars, so we beamed down. Shiray’s ship came into view. Cessar and several others joined us. I scoped my surroundings, overwhelmed by the damage. The other Kadanan ship had been blown to smithereens. It was still burning; black smoke filled the air. Scorch marks and debris littered the ground.

“Split into three teams and search the area. We have a few hours until nightfall,” Nile commanded.

Zephra, Kadeem, and several others of my team went north. She couldn’t have gone far, and I refused to even fathom the other options.

Several hours passed and Shiray was nowhere to be found. It was pitch black now and I was frantic. “Do you think she could have been taken hostage?” I asked Kadeem. Zephra’s eyes were wide and the others remained quiet. His mouth formed a tight line.

“That’s a possibility,” Kadeem admitted. We met back where we started and learned the other teams hadn’t had any luck either.

Nile’s forehead was wrinkled. “Let’s regroup at the palace and discuss this with my father,” Nile said.
