A Jar of Dreams

by Clarissa Cartham

GENRE: Contemporary Romance

  1. What or who inspired you to start writing?

I’ve always wanted to write but never really could find the time. I would have to credit my children for the inspiration to start writing. They knew I could tell stories on a whim and so kept nudging me as to when I would start writing a book.

  1. How did you come up with ideas for your books?

Sometimes I dream them. But mostly they are inspired by true life incidents. For example A Jar of Dreams was created when I read an article about a homeless woman hiding in a man’s closet in Japan for a year. Of course, I then take charge of my story and the plot is fictitious.

  1. What expertise did you bring to your writing?

I have a Bachelor’s degree in Language and Literature. My law degree also gets quite useful especially when I am writing about arrogant millionaires. My research skills have been my best asset and of course, my life experiences.

  1. What would you want your readers to know about you that might not be in your bio?

I am fun-loving and easy going and somehow that is not reflective in my bio. It sounds too… um… serious.

  1. As far as your writing goes, what are your future plans?

I have a contemporary romance scheduled to be released in January called The Yearning. It’s about two people who find each other while grieving for their lost spouses and learn to love all over again. I also have Captive 2 due soon after. It is a romantic thriller/adventure and second book to the Captive series about brides in captivity and a dashing hero willing to give his all in order to rescue her.

  1. If you could be one of the characters from any of your books, who would it be and why?

I would probably be Eric Tanner from A Jar of Dreams. He is handsome, smart and I love his resilience to survive despite losing his family. He’s not perfect but he is strong and will do what is necessary to live in the harsh world he comes from. I also admire his ability to love a woman for who she is and not what she is.

  1. Do you outline your books or just start writing?

I start writing. I do have a general synopsis but I like to surprise myself with the intricate details in the plot.

  1. Do you have any hobbies and does the knowledge you’ve gained from these carry over into your characters or the plot of your books?

I love gardening and I remember making Emma, my heroine from Winter’s End a gardener. I love to read as well. I basically read almost anything I can put my little fingers onto from scientific and art journals to life articles. And yes, I have discovered the knowledge do carry over to my characters. For example I once read on Helen Keller and this helped me shape Anne Mullen, my blind heroine from A Jar of Dreams.

  1. Have you started your next project? If so, can you share a little bit about your book?

My next project is titled Captive 2: Royal Heat. Like Captive 1, this is also about a woman held in captivity and it is up to the hero to save her. While Captive 1: Veiled Desires involved a female photographer captured during her trip to Kashmir, India, Captive 2 involves the enslavement of an Arabic princess and her rescue by Ethan Afridi, the King’s bodyguard and brother of Adam Afridi, the hero from Captive 1.

  1. What is your favorite reality show?

Any renovation or real estate show definitely! I love how people can take a run-down derelict and flip it into something beautiful. It takes skill, creativity and art to do that.

  1. Can you tell us a little bit about what it was like to write a series?

I find it challenging to write a series. I’ve found that to maintain the same theme, pace and ensure there is a smooth flow and continuation to the next book can be trying. It certainly takes more effort and skill than writing a stand alone. But ironically it is this challenge that makes writing a series more interesting.

When Eric Tanner, an assassin, is targeted to be murdered by his former employer, he seeks refuge in the house of a blind woman, Anne Mullen.

Eric knows how to live in silence. He’s done it all his life. So when he discovers Anne is blind and living on her own, he thinks this would be his perfect hideout.

But then he makes the mistake of his life. He forms an attachment to her. And for a man in his profession, such attachments are a weakness. Now, he must do everything he can to protect Anne from the world he’s come from.

He froze. She had returned to their discussion in the kitchen. Had he unsettled her again?

“Anne, if I said something-”

“No.” She shook her head. “You didn’t say anything. In fact, you said… did everything right. I took a chance when I invited you into my house. I was apprehensive as to whether I was doing the right thing. You see, I’ve never done this before. Invited a man, a stranger almost. I’m glad I did, Eric.”

The corner of his lips rose slightly. He leaned down towards her, looking directly into her eyes. He was so close; he could feel her nervous breath on his face. The warmth of her body tingled his skin. She was so achingly close that he needed everything in his power to restrain himself from taking her in his arms.

“Just don’t do it again,” he whispered. He tucked a cluster of her long golden tresses behind her ear. He let his fingers rest on her soft hair for a brief while as he mustered the courage to let them glide over the side of her face. He found none and straightened up again.

She deserved better, he thought. I have no right to confuse her and involve her in my messed up life.

What was your recent ‘what the heck did just happen’ moment from a book?

I was reading a romance by Helen Hardt titled Lady Alexandra’s lover and I have to say it has been one of the best romance eroticas I’ve read recently. Well to answer your question, when the story went from the adventures of the main character, Alexandra to the scenes of another character, Prudence and her erotic affairs. I thought I had missed something and had to flip back pages to check. But as I read on, I realized there were two parallel stories with a unifying end and a very interesting premise behind the Prudence character. That’s when I had my second ‘what the heck’ moment in that book.

Probably on my lounge, where I can lay down, put my feet up and have a steaming cup of coffee by my side as I read. 🙂
