The Alex Chronicles: What My Friends Don’t Know

by Tracy Reed

GENRE: Contemporary Romance

  1. What or who inspired you to start writing?

I can’t really say there was a particular person that inspired me to write. My mother, however, said I was spelling at age two and reading at three. She said reading was how she potty trained me.

  1. How did you come up with ideas for your books?

I get my story ideas from a pool of resources. Sometimes it’s a passing phrase, a thought or a situation I’ve heard about.

What expertise did you bring to your writing?

The only writing experience I brought to writing was my very brief journalism experience throughout my school years. I wrote for the school paper, year book and I had a weekly segment on my college television station.

  1. What would you want your readers to know about you that might not be in your bio?

What would I want readers to know about me…good question. I like to cook and a I’m a foodie. I’m also a design DIYer…I find interior design to be cathartic. When you read my books, you’ll notice that food, fashion, and design, are the supporting characters in my books.

  1. As far as your writing goes, what are your future plans?

This year, I’ve set a high writing goal, a title a month. I’m hoping to release the second books in all of my series this year. In fact, I have already completed the follow up to WHAT MY FRIENDS DON’T KNOW and THE GOOD GIRL, and part two of GENERATIONAL CURSE, is half-way complete. Later this month, I’m releasing LOVE NOTES, a book of romantic notes.

  1. If you could be one of the characters from any of your books, who would it be and why?

Which of my characters would I like to be…another really good question. I think I’d like to be Alex. In spite of the challenges that she’ll be encountering in future books, I still would like to be her. She really does have a dream life, not to mention, she has a hot boyfriend.

  1. If you were the casting director for the film version of your novel, who would play your leading roles?

If I was casting the Alex Series, Idris Elba would be Moses Adair. Alex is a little more difficult. I know what she looks like, but I’ve yet to see an actress that would be right as the character.

  1. Do you belong to a critique group? If so how does this help or hinder your writing?

No, I don’t belong to a critique group. I have very honest beta readers and my mom. My mother is tougher than any editor.

  1. When did you first decide to submit your work? Please tell us what or who encouraged you to take this big step?
  2. What is the best and worst advice you ever received? (regarding writing or publishing)

Worst advice I received: “Don’t read anyone else’s work in your genre.

Best advice I received: “Read everything you like.”

  1. Do you outline your books or just start writing?

I tried outlining and then forgot about the outline once I started writing.

  1. Do you have any hobbies and does the knowledge you’ve gained from these carry over into your characters or the plot of your books?

I don’t have a lot of hobbies, but the few I have get sprinkled into my characters. I like to cook, shop, read, watch movies and television and listen to music.

  1. Do you have an all time favorite book?

My favorite is the one I’m either reading or writing at the moment.

  1. Have you started your next project? If so, can you share a little bit about your book?

I’m currently pre-editing part two of The Good Girl and The Alex Series and completing part two of Generational Curse.

All I will say about the forthcoming projects is, I think readers will be surprised at some of the things that are revealed as well as meeting the new characters.

  1. Who is your favorite actor and actress?

My favorite actor is Idris Elba. Favorite actress is probably Viola Davis.

  1. Can you tell us a little about the black moment in your book?

The black moment is heart breaking and confusing for Alex. She’s torn between her ex and boyfriend. When my friend got to that scene, she emailed me and said Alex better not get back with her ex.

  1. What is your favorite reality show?

My favorite reality is a tie between “Say Yes To The Dress: Atlanta” and “Texas Flip and Move.”

  1. Can you tell us a little bit about what it was like to write a series.

I didn’t set out to write a series. However, when I got to the end, the characters kept talking. The same thing happened when I got to the end of Alex part two…oops, I gave it away. Yes, there’s a part three and I’m 90% done.

Now when I write, I think in series. I like exploring and developing the characters. It can be a little crowded in my brain. Although, I don’t plot per se, I know where the characters are headed. In the Alex series, I thought I’d end it after book three, but I sense a fourth, possibly a fifth book. I said I have to make sure all of the girls get married and then I thought about jumping ahead and doing something with their children. I have to see what they say.

  1. Anything else you might want to add?

There’s a free prequel for The Alex series. It’s an introduction the girls and their secrets.

Alexandra “Alex” Miller and her best friends are more like sisters. They live by the code that a good girlfriend will stick by you and be honest with you not matter what.

They’ve been friends over twenty years and have seen each other through marriage, divorce, broken engagement, death and other minor crisis. But it’s the secrets they’ve failed to trust each other with. Each of them is holding on to a secret they believe could destroy not only their reputation, but their friendship as well.

Alex and her best friends, Chloe, Taylor, Kendell and Dionne all long for one thing, a happy ending. As they’ve gotten older, they’ve discovered, not everyone gets the fairytale happy ending they want, but the reality life has orchestrated for them.

He stopped in front of us and my mind immediately filled with thoughts no good Christian girl should know anything about. I wonder what he looks like wet and naked. I looked around hoping I hadn’t said that out loud.

“Hello, Taylor.” He smiled.

Oh God, did You recycle Barry White’s voice box and put it inside this beautiful package? My hormones and body went into a tailspin and I was ruined for any other man on this planet.

“Hi Moses. I’m glad you came.”

He kissed the back of her hand and replied, “Thank you for inviting me. Good evening, I’m Moses Adair.” He took my hand, turned it over and gently kissed it. I think my uterus just flipped over.

Moses, lead me to the Promise land. “Alexandra Miller.”

“Are you the Alex?” He asked.

If I wasn’t, I was now. “Which Alex would that be?” I replied with a smile.

“The Alex I’ve been hearing people talk about all evening.”

“Depends on what you’ve heard.” I’m trying to flirt and that’s not something I’m good at. I wanted to tell him, “I’m whoever I need to be in order to keep talking to you.”

“Excuse me,” Taylor said and left us standing in the middle of the room.

“I heard a woman say she hoped the pink dress Alex was wearing would be available at the store, because she liked the way it…” He slowly looked me up and down. When his eyes met mine, he was smiling. I instantly recognized that smile. It’s the same one I had when I first spotted him. “…framed her face.”

I gave him the same smile he gave me. “Then, I guess I am that Alex.”

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

I am a single Christian woman who loves God, Fashion and Cute Guys. Not all women who write Christian fiction will admit to that.

The subjects I write about are considered taboo in Christian fiction. If you want to read about Christians dealing with unrequited love, apprehension to give love another chance, arranged marriages, physical attraction, divorce, annulment, controlling their urges, infidelity, abortion, dating younger men, being a single mother, slipping up and sleeping with your estranged ex, standing up for yourself, being honest about not liking your in-laws, still being attracted to your ex, battling postpartum depression, having challenges in your walk with Christ or if you aren’t too proud to admit you sometimes get angry and yell at God, then you’re in the right place.

The people that read my books have a thing for designer clothes and accessories and aren’t ashamed to admit it. To them a cute Christian guy on their arm is the finish to the perfect outfit. Sort of like lipstick, you don’t have to have it, but it sure makes you feel prettier when you do.
