Still Counting

by Phil Fragasso

GENRE: Chick-lit, bittersweet romance

Adam Donatello and Nina Morales share an immediate and powerful attraction, and their future together seems assured. But love is difficult enough without adding complications – real or imagined – to the mix. Nina sees life as a thousand shades of gray, while Adam tends towards black-and-white. He wants to move fast; she needs time. Nina sees her past liaisons with women as immaterial to their relationship, while her disclosure drives Adam to a state of irrational jealousy. He doesn’t know how he could compete with a woman; and his suspicions – which Nina views as hypocritical – lead them both to make decisions they may live to regret.

Before I knew it, the summer was almost over. I broached the subject with my folks about them going away for a few days and leaving the Cape house to Nina and me for a romantic getaway.

My mom, who was a charter member of the Nina Morales fan club, agreed immediately. “Of course. That’s a wonderful idea. Nina’s such a sweet girl. I’ve never seen you happier.”

My father, on the other hand—despite loving Nina almost as much as I did—had to have some fun. “You ashamed of us or something?”

I rolled my eyes and waited for him to continue.

“You planning on some of that crazy sex stuff you kids like to do?”

My mother slapped his arm. I shrugged.

He looked at my mom and nodded sagely while rocking back on his heels. “I’ve read all about it. They got specially trained gerbils that do all kinds of unbelievable things.” He turned toward me. “You bringing any gerbils into this house?”

“No, Dad.”

My mother gave him a harder push. “Be quiet, Joey. You can have the house for as long as you want, Adam. Your moron father and I have been talking about a trip to Maine, so this is a perfect opportunity.”

“Okay, my comely chickadee,” said my father. “But I just gotta ask one question, okay?”

“And what might that be?” she asked.

“Can we bring us a gerbil up to Maine?”

Nina laughed as hard as my mom and I when I recounted the conversation. She was also just as excited about getting away.

“We’ll be able to celebrate our fourth anniversary,” she said.

As dense as I often am, I stopped myself from asking what-the-hell-are-you-talking-about. “I know. That’s exactly what I was thinking.”

I think Nina knew I was full of crap and hadn’t a clue what anniversary she was referring to, but just as I did, she restrained herself from allowing a silly little detail ruin the spirit of the moment.

What was the worst book you ever read or stopped reading?

Mai, that’s a tough question. I’ve reached a point in my life where I will no longer waste time on books or movies that don’t engage me. I’ll give a book 10-20 pages and if it’s not working, I’m gone — and I erase the book from memory. Sorry I can’t be more specific.

Sue, I have a real soft spot for both Elizabeth Gilbert and Joyce Maynard, as well as Nick Hornby and Elinor Lippman. My reading tastes are really quite varied — just read “Why Sinatra Matters” and “Kitchens of the Great Midwest”. Thanks for asking
