Author Interview Questions

for

Christine’s Blogs

  1. What or who inspired you to start writing?

Who? My Grannie.

Where? Most times in the evening on her front stoops.

What? The library.

  1. How did you come up with ideas for your books?

That’s sort of a writer’s block situation. I don’t know where the ideas come from…

What expertise did you bring to your writing?

Having been fortunate to explore the mundane dust-bunnies of the halls of higher education that don’t seem mundane to me, can leave one at times feeling educated beyond one’s intelligence…or maybe it’s beyond one’s common sense. Over-educated can sometimes be unmanageable.

  1. What would you want your readers to know about you that might not be in your bio?

When I’m on-cue with a 10min-spotlight of attention…the gregarious alter ego is calculatingly evident. I don’t suffer lack of courtesy well.

  1. As far as your writing goes, what are your future plans?

Live long enough to have several rough drafts in edited, readable galleys.

  1. If you could be one of the characters from any of your books, who would it be and why?

A mix of a SEAL supporting character, Spinner Krespinak not developed in Hidden Chamber, but the center of action in following titles, plus a big dash of Ingram. Why? One can only write about oneself OR what one knows.

  1. If you were the casting director for the film version of your novel, who would play your leading roles?

In Hidden Chambers of Death Matt Damon AND Eric Christian Olsen for the protagonist & supporting bud of their SEAL team.

  1. Do you belong to a critique group? If so how does this help or hinder your writing?

Critique group…no. Support group…yes. Critiques are dangerous.

  1. When did you first decide to submit your work?

When I edited (or over-edited or edited a manuscript into a mess) till I was cross-eyed, and it was time to go to the next level.

Please tell us what or who encouraged you to take this big step?

My first agent, now passed on. One often can’t thank those who’ve helped.

  1. What is the best and worst advice you ever received? (regarding writing or publishing)

BEST: Encouraged to never stop writing; throw nothing away; always have backups.

WORST: You’ll never get it published.

  1. Do you outline your books or just start writing?

Just start. Depends on the idea…plot-title-motives-character-behavior-setting…I never know when it’ll strike. But it’s never failed.

  1. Do you have any hobbies and does the knowledge you’ve gained from these carry over into your characters or the plot of your books?

…oooo…very much so. Archeology, stamp collecting, non-fiction historical events-become-sagas or change the future. Hidden Chamber and the titles to follow…very much so.

  1. Do you have an all time favorite book?

Désirée…the biography of Bernardine Eugénie Désirée Clary, Queen Dowager of the current Bernadotte Dynasty of Sweden. She was French. So was her husband, Marshall of France, General Jean Baptiste Jules Bernadotte.

  1. Have you started your next project? If so, can you share a little bit about your book?

Yes…projects. Manuscripts are already in editors’ hands for both the second book in Moccasin Hollow Mystery Series and the third book in the sci-fi Cairns of Sanctuarie Series.

  1. Who is your favorite actor and actress?

I have two:

Ingrid Bergman, Kathyrn Hepburn

Matt Damon, Eric Christian Olsen

  1. What is your favorite reality show?

Boring beyond boring…no imagination, creation, etc etc…they’re all mind-sedatives for hands holding channel-changers or text-whatevers. Reality shows aren’t reality, AND saddest of all, they’re users of the rarest most valuable thing we have…TIME. I’ve never watched one.

  1. Can you tell us a little bit about what it was like to write a series.

It’s the “funnest” thing in writing! One gets to explore each of the characters in the absolute of their deepest parts/brains/lust&love/glory/beauty. All of that including the gears and sprockets of creating tales being told. Each book reveals a little more, explains a little more. Luv it!

BLURB:

Hidden Chamber of Death is a compelling tale of intrigue, murder, deception and suspense that leads retired Navy SEAL/part-time private investigator Craige Ingram in search of the connection between seemingly random murders and a banking conspiracy. Working with the local homicide investigator, who just happens to be a former Navy buddy, Craige Ingram’s attempts to protect a lonely widow and solve the case before another person dies are only thwarted by a psychotic killer whose motivation is based on pure depraved pleasure. In this first book of the MOCCASIN HOLLOW MYSTERY SERIES, the instincts and skills Ingram and his buddy acquired as Navy SEALS are tested to their limits.

EXCERPT:

Except for the Silver Bluff Museum of Southron Art annual charity event, prominent CEO Llewyn Royce Sedgewicke and PI Craige Howelle Graeme Roynane Ingram didn’t move in the same social circles. Chances were slim to none that Royce Sedgewicke would’ve ever been invited to the sprawling riverfront lands that had once been Grannie Ingram’s dogtrot Moccasin Hollow.

Unlike his collection of mounted big game trophies, portly Royce Sedgewicke’s food-bespattered tuxedoed carcass stretched like public road kill amid the crash and smash of food, china, crystal and splayed floral pieces, and very dead. Last-breath gurgles around his gagging tongue; smart phones madly clicked, flooding social media before the emergency ambulance arrived. The headlines made big local news. Online photos of his swollen tongue and overstuffed derrière made a bigger hit of his grand departure, squandering what little decorum he ever had. That mess was bad enough, but he left a bigger one behind.

The circle cinched a lot less social and way more snug when the head of Buckingham Parish Metro Law Enforcement, Investigative Support Team Graysen MacGerald paid an off-the-record visit to his grown-up-together SEAL Commanding Officer Craige `Peadinger’ Ingram. The death certificate said heart attack—it wasn’t.

Where is your favorite place to read?

    • Hawk MacKinney/Bud Ingramme
      February 25, 2016

BECKY – My all-time favorite place is the same as it was with my Grannie…early a.m. before sunrise…sittin’ on the porch swing with a hot cup of bilge-water kick-‘em coffee, taking’ in the lazy early gray-to-color(s)-coming-alive of the serene bayou nite-critters skulking gone & the daytime crew comin’ about. There’s nothing in a city that can even come close. Thank U for stopping by & commenting –

Betty W – The cover was awesome. Would like to claim it was my construct BUT it wasn’t. The graphic artist has an outstanding eye-catching ability to bring out details of the tale told. The other covers for my sci-fi(s) series are even more distinctive. Thanx for stopping by both host sites…

    February 27, 2016

I’m intrigued by the description of the deceased – and of how he the media took the worst pictures ever of his demise – not surprised in the least at that! I like the idea of banking and a murder conspiracy – would not surprise me in the least as a book topic or in real life! This sounds very interesting – thanks for the interview and giveaway!

    • Hawk MacKinney
      February 29, 2016

Maria D – You’re welcome…glad it intrigued – thank U for stopping by & commenting. You’ve put your finger on the raw “…one writes/feels those things we’ve lived…” non-fiction wellspring-twists of the biped animals that we are in the ‘simple’ fiction roundabout us. And true of sci-fi…at least the tales this writer enjoys flinging across the cosmos. We label non-fiction plots/settings/characters from what we’ve observed, which of course makes it fiction. Ain’t it fun!
