IN His Keeping

by T.J. Adams

GENRE: Paranormal Romance

At eighteen, Elise Duxten must end her life. Her younger sister, Marly, lies dead because of her. To pay for her crimes she sells her soul to the devil in exchange for her sister’s life.

Matrix, King of the crossroads, the Devil’s right hand man for the last twenty years, is willing to make the deal, eager for another pawn. To sweeten the exchange he gives her one year to mourn her decision before he takes her for good.

In that year he’s determined to torment her, driven by envy at the strength in her soul. Though having lived years apart, the same heartless man, Manx Sloazan, destroyed their lives.

With her remaining life, Elise must teach her sister to live without her and find the courage to say goodbye. It won’t be easy. Sloazan is determined to make Elise pay for a bungled drug sale and Matrix wants to torture her soul. Or does he?

With Elise, Matrix has discovered something he thought he’d lost. His heart. But he is the devil’s, without the ability to choose. When the time comes, will he be prepared to let her go in order to save her soul? Or will the Devil make sure he gets what is his due?

I looked past her to Matrix, standing with his back to the forward march of people, making them flow around him, watching my reunion.

The shock of our meeting numbed me but as I stared into her eyes, reality caught up, unfreezing the frozen. All my banked emotions flooded forward and hollowed me inside. I was surprised to find a world full of them poured through. I became the little girl in the kitchen, eight years of my life cut away. I was no longer the third party removed from the unfolding event. The last emotion, pain, hooked onto my heart. Tears stung my eyes. My mother became blurred, which perhaps was good because I was blurred to her.

I pushed past her toward Matrix, who waited, looking like a rock amongst the storm. I came up and stood in front of him, glaring up into the blackness of his eyes.

“I won’t shelter you from this. Cracks are good. If you live through it, you’ll be stronger.”

“And harder, perhaps a person like my stepdad. Lost in his pain.”

“Everyone is wounded, but not necessarily ruined. Some suffer more than others, but it’s what you choose to do with the wounds that count. Choices are what separates those below from those up high.”

“And you chose to screw your life?”

“You make it sound negative. It needn’t be depending on which way you want to head.”

“What was your wounding?”

“Maybe I didn’t need one, perhaps it was my choice to meet the Devil.”

I closed my eyes and shook my head. “There’s no choice.”

His silence made me look at him again. The crowd swarmed past in a hurry to reach their destinations, but he was left unsullied by the moving masses, like an island, untouchable. I was swallowed, pushed and bruised, trying to remain in contact. He reached out and clasped my chin in his fiery grasp, and everything stilled around us. He lifted my chin, so I craned to look into his eyes.

“Do you believe that?”

For a couple of seconds I couldn’t answer because my mind was busy focusing on other things, on the point where his fingers touched me and on the depth of his eyes. They tore right through me, shattering me, but if I looked hard enough perhaps I would penetrate to his core and discover what it meant to live in hell. His smile, a small quirk of his lips, tore me from our moment and back to the question he’d asked.

“I do.”

“Then you truly are mine.”

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

TJ Adams couldn’t decide what she wanted to be when she grew up and travelled instead. She returned from overseas with the thrill of adventure still inside, so decided to train as a commercial light aircraft pilot, flying out of the remote aboriginal communities of north Western Australia.

A badly damaged eardrum clipped her wings, and she returned to Perth to complete a BA of science. During this time she meet her husband halfway up a rock face, while engaging in one of her favorite past times, rock climbing.

Somewhat tamed, TJ Adams and hubby settled in the Perth Hills with their three children.

When her children were little, TJ Adams found her new passion—books. Countless books later and the idea of becoming an author emerged.

Her favorite genre is paranormal with her first novel Bound under contract with Eternal press. Unable to stop her fingers from tapping, TJ Adams has since formed a partners with another Perth author, Renee Hammond to complete the Hells Gate series. In His Keeping is her latest release.

Do you work to an outline or plot or do you prefer just see where an idea takes you?

I recently read a blog about this question and they called it the swooper or basher. Swoopers dives in from the word go and bashers hammer out ever detail before they begin. I’m a bit of both. I start as a swooper, turn into a basher halfway through but then start swooper again.
