Bound by Oath and Honour

by Debbie Peterson

GENRE: Paranormal/fantasy romance

Hello Christine! I’m happy to be here and answer all of your questions!

1. What or who inspired you to start writing?

My beloved husband who thought my stories were good enough to write down and submit to a publisher gets all of the credit. Without his gentle nudges, encouragement, and support, I wouldn’t even have considered it.

  1. How did you come up with ideas for your books?

Any number of things can stoke my imagination. A painting, a song, or even a specific place like a misty garden, an ocean or a flaming sunset. An article in a magazine or on the internet can do it as well. The idea for Bound by Oath and Honour came from an article concerning one Captain Frank Beck who, alongside his men, disappeared without a trace from the battle at Gallipoli during World War I. After reading that, my imagination took off!

3. What would you want your readers to know about you that might not be in your bio?

That I love hearing from and interacting with them. Their notes and emails make the long hours of writing, rewriting, and editing, all worthwhile. I treasure each one, so, please, keep them coming!

  1. As far as your writing goes, what are your future plans?

To write all of the stories floating around inside my head before I die. Since one story always seems to breed another, I don’t know if that goal can ever be reached. Hopefully, the day I take my last breath, my fingers will still be on the keyboard.

  1. If you could be one of the characters from any of your books, who would it be and why?

That’s a difficult question. If I could, I would take a turn at being every single one of my heroines. But if I have to choose just one, I think I’d choose Mariah Jennings from Spirit of the Knight. She is a highly acclaimed artist and I love art. I wished I could paint like she paints and have all of the experiences she has had while creating her wondrous paintings for the Gallery of Castles project. Having Sir Cailen fall in love with me wouldn’t be half bad either.

6. Do you belong to a critique group? If so how does this help or hinder your writing?

Yes I do. For me a critique group and their oft times brutal comments and suggestions have, in the end, always made for a far better book. I wouldn’t want to do without them. Thanks for your input guys!

  1. Do you outline your books or just start writing?

I’ve given up on the outline. From book one, my stories and characters always take on a life of their own regardless of my well laid plans. My characters turn me down roads I didn’t consider traveling before and say things I didn’t intend them to say. Again, the books are always better than the first idea or feeble outline I began with.

  1. Do you have any hobbies and does the knowledge you’ve gained from these carry over into your characters or the plot of your books?

I am an avid genealogist. I love not only researching my own family history, but enjoy helping others do the same. While delving into one’s genealogy, you become part detective and part historian. The knowledge I’ve gained in these two areas has manifested itself in several of the books I’ve written.

  1. Have you started your next project? If so, can you share a little bit about your book?

Three of the paranormal romances I’ve written, Spirit of the Rebellion, Spirit of the Revolution, and Spirit of the Knight, are romances between mortal and ghost. The book I am writing now is another such story. This time between a soldier that died during World War II at the battle of Normandy, and his destined soul mate.

I am also doing the necessary research for part two of the Bound by Oath and Honour series. This one will focus on Levi.

10. Can you tell us a little bit about what it was like to write a series?

Saying goodbye to my characters at the end of the book is always a sad time for me. After all, I’ve spent a lot of time in their company. When writing a series, you don’t have to say goodbye. At least not yet. For me that’s the fun of continuing a series. Another plus? The foundation is already laid.
Thank you so much for inviting me to join you today! Truly, I’ve had a ball!

Fresh from her photo shoot in Northern England, wildlife photographer Tala Westbrook makes a promised stop at the family manor in Staffordshire, desperately in need of renovation. Though she didn’t plan to stay longer than it took to find a contractor, she is caught up in an ancient paranormal war. Despite the danger all around, she finds herself falling for the handsome, enigmatic man assigned to protect her.

Micah Berrington, elite guardian from the realm of the Bewitan Fierd, is used to protecting men of strength in the greatest of peril, not a female looking for someone to repair her home. Yet the assignment is far more than it seems and so is the beautiful woman destined to capture his heart, regardless of the cost.

“I’m not leaving until you tell me whatever it is you don’t want me to know.” She set her heels, and placed a hand on her hip.

His anger flared. “Is that right? A little while ago you couldn’t wait to leave this place.”

Tala gave her head a snooty little toss. “A lot has changed since then, wouldn’t you agree?”

He brushed the barb aside. “Then let me get you a pillow and blanket. You can make yourself comfortable on my sofa.”

Indignation filled her lovely eyes. “That’s it? That’s all you’re going to say? Really?”

Micah met her gaze without a flinch. “Really.”

“Whatever.” She gave him a curt nod and stormed toward the door.

He had fallen into the deep, dark abyss of the feminine whatever. Nonetheless, he stepped in front of the entryway blocking her path. “Where are you going, Tala?”

“Back inside the forest, not that it’s any of your business.”

“Why would you do something as foolish as that?”

“To find some answers, since you’re unwilling to share what you know.” She gritted her teeth. “Now, get out of my way.”

He held his ground while disregarding the directive. “Just what do you expect to find out there?”

She shrugged away the question. “I’m not sure. However, I do know those creatures left tracks. I’m quite adept at finding and following them to wherever they might lead. Trust me.”

“Regardless of the danger?”

“I can take care of myself.”

Debbie is an author of paranormal and fantasy romance because she has a soft spot for fairy tales, the joy of falling in love, making an impossible love possible, and happily ever after endings. She loves animals of every persuasion, music, art, beautiful sunrises, sunsets, the smell of rain, and thunder storms.

When she is not busy conjuring her latest novel, Debbie spends time with the members of her very large family in the lovely, arid deserts of southern Nevada, where some of those spectacular sunsets occur. She also pursues her interests in genealogy—which she also teaches—mythology, and history.

You’re comments about series writing are spot on, Debbie. Not only do authors get to hang onto their characters a while longer, but readers do too. I’ve enjoyed all of your novels, including BOUND BY OATH AND HONOUR and look forward to the two new ones you’re working on!
