GENRE: Science Fiction

INTERVIEW:

What or who inspired you to start writing?

As far as what inspired me to write, I can’t pinpoint any one thing in particular. I’ve always told myself stories. It just never occurred to me that anyone else would be interested in reading them. The authors who inspired me to write is much easier to answer: Stephenie Meyer and Octavia Butler.

If you are familiar with their works, I’m sure you may think I’m crazy. But here’s how each inspired me. I’ve always been an avid reader. But really, all of the authors I have loved over the years have always been well-established authors who were writing short stories in elementary school and majoring in English Lit or some equivalent in college.

I never tried to write anything creative as a child and majored in engineering in college. So I really didn’t think I could be a writer. Until I read Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series. I loved her stories, so when I finished the series, I immediately began searching for other novels by her and found nothing. It was the first time that I’d read, and loved, something by a first-time author. And even better she, like me, never thought anyone would ever want to read anything she thought of.

So, after seeing that I thought that maybe I could, maybe, perhaps, possibly, potentially write a novel other people would want to read. Then I was introduced to Octavia Butler. The first novel I read was an omnibus called Lillith’s Brood. It contained three previously individually published novels Dawn, Adulthood Rites, and Imago.

I was so enthralled by Dawn that I read until I fell asleep with my head literally laying on the page I was reading. I would take this book to the bathroom with me at work and read a few pages in the stall. I was hooked. Then as I was about to read Adulthood Rites, I saw her dedication. It said, “To Lynn – write.”

That dedication was the gasoline to the spark lit by Stephenie Meyer. My nickname is Lynn. It felt as if she was speaking to me when I read the dedication. That moment I began looking for a writers group. And that’s how I began writing.
How did you come up with ideas for your books?

For The Heaviness of Knowing, I was inspired by the fact that I have vivid dreams and many people that I am close to, don’t. When I thought about why this could be, my life-long love of science fiction provided an answer. Aliens. Aliens could be using our dreams to control us. And, why else would they want to control us if not to invade and conquer Earth?

In general, I’m inspired by taking everyday events, wondering “what if”, and figuring out what would happen to the people affected by the “what if” scenario.
As far as your writing goes, what are your future plans?

To write as fast as possible. There are currently three (3) books planned for The Conscious Dreamer Series. Once I finish writing Book 3, I have an idea for another series. And the characters from that new series keep interrupting my work on Books 2 and 3 of The Conscious Dreamer series to tell me their stories.
If you could be one of the characters from any of your books, who would it be and why?

I’d probably want to be Lauren. I would love to find out that there’s this secret world that I’m part of. Though I will say you really only get a brief introduction to her in The Heaviness of Knowing. But in Book 2, that’s currently being written, you spend more time seeing the world from her point of view. And I really like who she is.
Do you belong to a critique group? If so how does this help or hinder your writing?

I currently don’t belong to an actual critique group. Though when I first started writing, I did. I’m no longer a member because I moved to a different state for two and a half years. They were very helpful. Everyone did a really good job of giving constructive criticism. Whenever anyone questioned something in the story, I never felt it was personal. They really helped me in the early days of my writing.

For The Heaviness of Knowing, I had an unofficial critique group of friends and family members. These are women who: 1, I know are readers; 2, I know would give me honest feedback; 3, I know I could trust their questions or criticisms were coming from a sincere place.
When did you first decide to submit your work? Please tell us what or who encouraged you to take this big step?

About four (4) months into writing what would be the final version of my novel I decided that I would self-publish. What led me to the decision was an author named Susan Kaye Quinn. I read a YA novel she had written and went to her website to find out more about her and her writing.

On her website was a link labeled, For Writers. When I clicked on it, I saw that she is an indie author and that she had all of these resources for other people interested in becoming indie authors. I bought a copy of her Indie Authors Survival Guide, and that was it.
Do you outline your books or just start writing?

For The Heaviness of Knowing, I didn’t have an outline. But that’s because I’ve been thinking about this story for almost ten years. So I was pretty clear on what would happen. But for Books 2 and 3, I have written an outline. But that’s just to keep the details of the series in the correct order.

But even with an outline, if the story starts going in another direction while I’m writing it, I let it go in that direction and make changes to the rest of the story as needed.
.Have you started your next project? If so, can you share a little bit about your book?
Yes. As I said, I’m working on Book 2 of The Conscious Dreamer Series. It takes place about six months after the end of The Heaviness of Knowing. We see what happens to the two main characters from The Heaviness of Knowing, Lauren and Roxal as they settle into their lives after the choices they made in Book 1.
Can you tell us a little about the black moment in your book?
For Roxal, her black moment comes when she’s been captured by the very people she was afraid would kill her. It seems that her fear is about to come true. And part of her accepts this fate. But then, an opportunity presents itself that would allow her to, maybe, save her own life. She has to decide if she wants to keep fighting or give in to this overwhelming enemy.

Lauren’s black moment isn’t as bad. Her low moment comes when, after finding out about Roxal and her planet, Lauren has to decide if she wants to forget about this craziness and go back to her normal life. Or, if she wants to do something with this knowledge.

. Can you tell us a little bit about what it was like to write a series?
It’s challenging, but fun. It’s challenging in that Book 1 sets up what your world is like. It sets the basic rules, so to speak. Then as you write the additional books, you always have to be mindful of what you’ve already written or said on a particular topic, or character, or event. And if you want to change an established fact, you have to come up with a justification for it.

Book 1 in a series is pretty easy to write. But it definitely gets harder as you write more books.

BLURB:

Roxal has spent her life using her Dream Traveler ability in service to Trebor’s gods, The Keepers. Even after she learns they aren’t all powerful like she was taught, she dutifully continues to manipulate an Earth woman named Lauren to do their bidding. Roxal’s content pretending to be a loyal follower, until her mate’s activities with a rebel faction put both of their lives in jeopardy.

Meanwhile on Earth, Lauren is struggling to find balance at work and at home. To make matters worse, she develops an acute case of insomnia which disrupts her life. While trying to cure her condition, Lauren discovers that not only do aliens exist, but that she’s been in contact with one for most of her life. And that’s just for starters.

Now Lauren’s world is turned upside down. And Roxal has to figure out if she can harness the survival instincts which before told her to hide and use it to now fight for her survival.

EXCERPT:

In the dark, with their sleeping unit’s covering pulled up to their necks, Roxal placed her hands against Edo’s naked stomach and used them to communicate.

What has happened? Roxal asked in the hand signal language Edo had taught her. Why are the Reps looking for traitors now?

I am not sure, exactly. I thought it too dangerous to meet with my Resistor contacts after the assembly. But… he paused during his response.

But what? she prodded.

Roxal, you have always asked that I not give you details because you did not want to get involved. The questions you are asking will get you involved.

This time Roxal paused before answering Edo because he was right. Even after her moment of defiance and after learning their gods were fake, and that her mission with Lauren was a lie, and that she was actually a slave, Roxal had asked him to not give her any details on the activities of the Resistors. She had thought that by not knowing any of the details about the Resistors, she could keep herself safe by denying membership. However, today had shown her otherwise. The sight of the Helper pleading for her life while declaring her innocence had shown Roxal that there was no such thing as being safe.

She finally admitted to herself, that as a slave to The Keepers and the Reps, her life was forfeit from the moment she was created. Appeasing her gods and the Reps could keep her alive. But if they ever decided that she should die, she now knew there was nothing she could say or do to stop it.
