Dark Deliverance

by Tamela Miles

GENRE: Paranormal Romance

  1. What or who inspired you to start writing?

Thanks for taking time to chat with me today, Christine! When I was about 11 or so, I was really into 80s movies, soap operas, and romance novels. More than a few of these left me disappointed with the endings so I decided to turn my writing attention from ordinary kids’ stuff to re-writing whatever I was watching or reading with a “better” ending – which was my kind of ending. ::laughing:: Age 11 soon turned into age 21 and I still had the writing bug. I had notebooks filled with stories and scribbled ideas, by that time.
2. How did you come up with ideas for your books?

I spent summer of 2015 binge watching old episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which I adored until it ended in the early 2000s. I’ve always been fascinated with slayers and hunters, going back to the Van Helsing lore. It occurred to me that the reading world may want to see my vision of a multicultural demon hunter, one who was on the cusp of innocence and a little, inexperienced newbie to the hunting game and holy wars. Elle Connor and the Hell On Heels series was birthed creatively from that vision I had.

What expertise did you bring to your writing?

I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Child Development and am currently a graduate student at Cal State University San Bernardino, in the Educational Specialist program for School Psychologist. I bring to the writing table a wealth of of child development and therapy knowledge. Also, I’m bringing years of English, Psychology, and Sociology classes. I believe myself to be pretty well educated when it comes to children and the wonderful, often maddening things they do. In recent years, I’ve found my focus to have shifted from young children to young and new adults. I’m intrigued about their transitions from childhood to adulthood and love writing about that, with a paranormal bent, of course.

  1. What would you want your readers to know about you that might not be in your bio?

I’m a former flight attendant and have had tons of adventures while traveling Northern and Southern California extensively. On my break times, I would sit at the back of the plane, scribbling new story ideas as the inspiration from all the beauty of each city moved me.

  1. As far as your writing goes, what are your future plans?

My third novella in the Hell On Heels series, “Hell Hath No Fury” is due to release from The Wild Rose Press in late 2016, so I see a whole lot of promotion in my future. ::laughing:: That will certainly keep you busy, as an author. Currently on my writing plate are revisions and polishing up another paranormal romance novella, tentatively entitled “Once Bitten”, that I’ve been slaving over for the past few months. It features Ash and Delilah, who are characters in a short story that’s featured in my horror/paranormal romance compilation, “Rock, Paper, Scissors”, which was released by the wonderful Broken Publications in late 2015.

  1. If you could be one of the characters from any of your books, who would it be and why?

That’s easy! I would be Elle Connor, the demon hunter from my Hell On Heels series or Anya James from “Rock, Paper, Scissors” because I built those heroines to last! They’re both hard to break down emotionally and mentally, mouthy, and ready for any challenge.

  1. When did you first decide to submit your work? Please tell us what or who encouraged you to take this big step?

Prior to 2015, I had only been self – published because I was wary of submitting my work, for fear that a team of editors would make so many changes that my writing voice would be lost. I did some research and discovered that things had changed since my first self-published book release in 2011. Small presses were now flourishing so I decided to start there. The editor at Broken Publications loved my work and I hopped on board. I had also heard wonderful things about The Wild Rose Press from a few of their authors so I crossed my fingers and submitted my work to them. I also have a supportive male mentor and friend, who is a member of the film industry. He truly believed that I had a strong, colorful writing voice. He persuaded me to get my work out there and never mind the fear of failure. Another mentor and friend of mine is a fellow Wild Rose Press author and she singlehandedly helped me strengthen and polish my writing. She said I would be crazy not to submit to one of the smaller presses.

7. Do you outline your books or just start writing?

I totally used to pants my way through an entire writing project. I soon realized that I needed the direction that comes from a solid outline so I changed things up a bit. I now work from a basic, bare-bones outline and fill in the inspired bits as I write. Direction with a touch of freedom is my new motto! ::laughing::

8. Do you have an all time favorite book?

I absolutely adore the Sookie Stackhouse novels from Charlaine Harris! I also love most Stephen King novels, in particular the classic “The Shining” and his follow up to it, “Dr. Sleep.” I’ve recently delved deeper into work by author, Zora Neale Hurston. She has such presence and a way with words.

9. Can you tell us a little about the black moment in your book?

The true black moment in “Dark Deliverance” is when Elle and Patrick are faced with the very strong possibility of losing their lives in a holy war showdown. They have these sweet moments of caring for each other and bonding as friends and allies. The love blossoming between them is abruptly sidelined as they must both shoulder their responsibilities as fighters. As Elle would put it, “Who the hell has time for love?”

10. Anything else you might want to add?

It’s been an absolute blast talking with you today! Thank you for having me as your guest and I look forward to coming back soon. : )

Elle Connor’s life is as grim as she had always feared. Years of demon slaying have left her with nothing to show for her trouble. She’s convinced a “normal” life was never meant for her.

Patrick Holt wants nothing more than to be away from the holy wars and has lived quietly for years as an average human. The trouble is that he’s anything but average–he’s a fallen hybrid angel.

When Tagas the guardian angel pairs them up to investigate the brutal slayings of young women in Los Angeles, Elle wants nothing to do with Patrick. As Elle and Patrick begin to understand each other, irritation is forgotten and fiery passion ignites between them. “No ties” is how they both live, but Elle soon begins to long for much more. As they become sucked deeper into the mysterious killings, Elle fears that, in this battle, Hell will win.

Elle leaned back on the bar counter, resting on her forearms. A shot glass, one of quite a few that evening, was within reach. Dressed casually in a white lace camisole and blue jeans, leather jacket on top, she easily caught the eye of a number of men. Her black leather stiletto boots obviously had years of mileage on them, but they sent a silent message that she was, perhaps, not to be totally trusted in spite of her innocent face and lush, dark curls.
